Barium Sulfate Scale Removal From Wellbore in 2 hours, 58 minutes with Extreme Pulse Technology (ExP)

Location: Wayne County, Mississippi

Problem: Barium sulfate (BaSO4) scale mixed with sand debris in the wellbore

Objective: Utilize 1.25″ CT with the 1.33″ ExP BHA to remove barium sulfate scale, sand and debris from inside the tubing and wellbore, utilizing produced water and N2 (when needed)

During the course of the operations friction reducer and gel sweeps were utilized for the operations

Procedure: The Extreme Pulse Technology (ExP) tool was deployed via 1.25″ third party coiled tubing. An initial pump rate of 0.25 bbls/min with 200 CFM N2 was pumped with circulating pressures of 1,200 psi

The first bridge was encountered at 4,758′, where the CT was picked up by 25ft and the fluid rate was increased to 0.5 bbls/min with 100lbs WOB, which removed the debris bridge.

At 5,082 a second bridge was encountered. Within 10 minutes, the coil pushed through more blockages. The ExP continued to remove the obstructions in a timely manner to TD. During the cleaning the flow-back fluids were observed to contain over 75% solids which were presumed to be BaSO4, sand and debris.

Total Time from RIH to TD: 2 hours, 58 minutes

Extreme Pulse Technology (ExP) implements multi-flow conditioning patterns through a series of resonating chambers, which create dynamic high and low pressure events during workover (cleanout) operations.

The ExP surge clean out tool can be utilized in oil, gas and water wells for optimal cleaning of the wellbore and near wellbore regions. When utilized for surge clean out of injection, wastewater and disposal wells the ExP will help improve injectivity by breaking and removing debris within the near region. Read more about ExP

Coil Tubing Technology, Inc. (CTT) supplies a full line of enterprise-class, proprietary coiled tubing tools. The core business of the Company is worldwide development and marketing of specialty tools and related innovative technical solutions used with coiled tubing and jointed pipe in the bottomhole assembly for the exploration and production of hydrocarbons.

Since its formation in 1998, CTT has specialized in the design of proprietary tools for the coil tubing industry, concentrating on four categories of tubing application: thru tubing fishing; thru tubing workover and intervention; pipeline clean out; and coil tubing lateral drillout operations.
